BIOGRAPHY
My name is Michelle Medina, I am a Senior Wild Animal Keeper at the Bronx Zoo’s Mammal Department. I have been a mammal keeper at the Bronx Zoo for over 24 years. During this time, I have primarily worked with Asian carnivores and hoofstock, including our elephants, rhinos, tigers, snow leopards, deer and antelope. I was raised in the Bronx, and as I was growing up visited to zoo and loved observing the same species that I now have been fortunate to work with. I enjoy my job as a zookeeper and especially the relationships I have built with some of the animals in my care. My personal and professional mission has been promoting safety and team building for my fellow keepers.
I am known to take advantage of opportunities that come my way, and upon learning about Miami University’s Project Dragonfly Master’s program, I enrolled. I viewed the program as a personal and professional challenge, and as a mechanism to combat my feelings of stagnation. As a result, I have created an Environmental Stewardship Team at my local chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers. The team brings zookeepers together to work on clean-ups and various projects on the Bronx River.
In my free time I enjoy being on two wheels (mountain biking and motorcycles), travel and photography: from natural to industrial subjects, and whatever catches my eye.
